Jeremiah Masoli, Garrett Embry Accused of Theft by Fraternity.
Posted on 24. Jan, 2010 by Keith Becker in Oregon Ducks
From Yahoo! Rivals [UPDATE, 9:14 p.m. ET] Despite a good deal of specificity in this afternoon’s reports that Oregon players Jeremiah Masoli and Garrett Embry were suspects in a fraternity theft — including direct, incriminating quotes from the student who called police — Eugene television station KMTR reported tonight that Masoli and Embry are NOT suspects in the incident described below, according to police. Their names do appear in the police report, however, adding to a web we can only hope will be untangled over the next few days. As they say at KMTR, stay tuned.
UPDATE (11:00 AM): Here is the latest from the Oregonian. SAE member Max Wolfard has come forward, but still nothing official.
I also heard that Wolfard missed all his classes today and filed for a transfer to Oregon State. He’s in a tough situation.
Here are two more stories from BusterSports.com: here and here.
UPDATE (10:00 PM): “KMTR is reporting that Masoli was named in the Eugene theft report, but police say he’s not a suspect.”
I don’t want Masoli to be guilty, but my source at the frat said they “are very big duck fans” and want to protect the program. Therefore I can’t fully believe the report that Masoli is not a suspect in the case. Just speculation, but they are going to try and save Masoli from any legal ramifications.
The fraternity has very good reasons to say Masoli is innocent and blame it wholly on Embry. Embry is the perfect scape goat: reputation as a trouble maker, connections with SAE and most importantly, NOT THE BEST PLAYER ON THE TEAM.
Read everything with speculation.
UPDATE: There is a report from http://duckterritory.com/that says Masoli is not involved. It is a paid report so I cannot read further. For the sake of everyone, I hope it’s true.
BREAKING NEWS: Sources say quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and little-used wide receiver Garrett Embry were allegedly caught stealing from a fraternity party at Sigma Alpha Epsilon last night as revenge for Embry being kicked out earlier. The fraternity is reporting two macbook pros, a guitar and a projector as stolen.
Nothing is official and no arrests have been made. Just rumor from sources in the fraternity who wish to stay unnamed at this point. NOTHING IS OFFICIAL.
Masoli has been in trouble with the law before and Embry has been described by friends as a “clepto”. Members of the fraternity confirmed the story as “true” and said they are keeping quiet about the situation for now.
Masoli was kicked off his high school (Juniperro Serra, San Mateo, CA) team his junior year because he and three other members of the team jumped a kid at the local mall.
If these reports are indeed true, it just adds to the list of Oregon players who have had recent legal trouble.
This is not the news Oregon wanted coming off of a Rose Bowl appearance and looking to improve with Masoli entering his senior season.
In completely unrelated news, kicker Rob Beard was apparently jumped last night while trying to break up a party on 16th and Hilyard and was taken to the emergency room.
Former Duck Daniel Padilla tweeted this earlier this afternoon: “Twitter Fam please keep my friend Rob Beard in your prayers he is going through some severe surgeries today!! Keep fighting bro. I believe.”
I have received conflicting reports on his condition. Please keep him in your prayers.

Your going to post unofficial information that could make two well known athletes look very very bad but the sources arent willing to print their names?
Very very weak and if proven not true I hope the sources get sued for slander.

I also like how you post the following.
“BREAKING NEWS: Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and little-used wide receiver Garrett Embry were caught stealing from a frat party last night as revenge for Embry being kicked out earlier.”
But then you go on to say its unofficial.
You just accused them of doing it!

I am only reporting what I have heard. I am not saying Masoli or Embry are guilty at this point, just saying it is a possibility.

Wow, wouldn’t it be great if you were the guy who started these rumors before signing day and
1) they weren’t actually true
2) it cost Oregon some recruits?
Just cause you write it on a blog doesn’t mean you are some kind of reporter.
Hot debate. What do you think?

I’m not sure what to make of the theft aspect of this story until it is confirmed but what about the possible injury to a duck starter. I’d like to know what is really goin on here

WHAT IS AT ISSUE HERE IS NOT ROBBERY. ROBBERY INVOLVES FORCE OR INTIMIDATION. The crimes and penalties of theft (conversion) and robbery are very different. Please try to be accurate in your reporting.

The difference between you and Woodward and Bernstein is that they got great tips on where to find information and then THEY DID RESEARCH AND CITED THEIR SOURCES!!!!
What was that guy’s name who filed an injunction against the new Arena with the city of Eugene? The U of O student?
He’s pretty popular, isn’t he?

My advice is you delete everything under the Duckterritory link, and replace with a disclaimer.
Really dumb move on your part.

“I am only reporting what I have heard. I am not saying Masoli or Embry are guilty at this point, just saying it is a possibility.”
Really? That is a weak explanation. Someone could tell me something about you (Keith Becker) and I could post it as “BREAKING NEWS” and as long as I add words like “rumor” or “clepto” or “true” I might get a lot of hits off of it too.
If you really wanted to further yourself in journalism (which you have said before) you would be more careful about what you post. This reeks of weak due diligence and nonexistent research.

What are you thinking? Why are you running an unsourced story that no reputable publisher has gone public with yet? Congratulations on being one of the first to say something, but no one’s going to be confusing your efforts with real journalism any time soon. As others have said, big mistake.

To be fair… DuckSportsNews.com also tweeted and put it out there to begin with as well.
I thought they, too, rushed to say they were the first on the story.
But let’s be real — this is Keith’s blog. And he’s simply blogging about what he has heard. Although some of the “reports” were very misleading in how they were/are written, he has said all along that they are unconfirmed and unofficial.
Let’s not confuse a blog with a reputable journalism outlet.
Let’s all wait until tomorrow when actual police reports can be obtained and then go from there.
Hot debate. What do you think?

Pac-10 Rivalry -
We were not first with this story.
We are not first with any story.
All we did was pull together disparate links into one blog post.
Much like we do on a daily basis.
Unfortunately, this just happened not to be a positive story.

Even though this is “just a blog”, you are publicly accusing someone. That’s a big risk. And as someone who was inaccurately accused of things on the intenet before, its a really terrible thing to do to someone.

Due to the value of the items being stolen (allegedly), this could qualify as grand theft. Futhermore, there is also an argument that residential burglary charges could be filed.
Hopefully for the players allegedly involved, this is all bs and nothing will come of this.

Love your stuff, but this is irresponsible journalism. You’re putting a lot of reputations on the line, including your own. Your sources are frat members who won’t reveal their names? Weak. I think I’ll trust the newspapers and police reports who disclose all the facts.
