Another one bites the dust, it looks like.

The Pit Crew’s chant of “OOOOh, Malcolm Armstead!” every time the junior point guard is inbounded the ball may, in fact, never be chanted again.

Malcolm Armstead becomes the latest casualty of the Ducks' tumultuous recent struggles.

Eugene television station KVAL reported this morning that the 6-foot transfer from Chipola Junior College may indeed transfer again.

KVAL says “a source with knowledge of the situation” told them Armstead had requested and been granted his release from the University of Oregon.

Since Ernie Kent’s firing in March, four players have transferred from the program: Matt Humphrey, Josh Crittle, Drew Wiley, and Jamil Wilson. Armstead would be the fifth.

Five is the number of days in the workweek. It’s the number of gears in a manual transmission. It’s the number of Supreme Court justices necessary to render a majority decision.

With four days in the workweek, the weekend would be too long. Four gears in a transmission and the car won’t run. Four Supreme Court justices and, well, you don’t have a decision.

So I guess it makes sense a fifth player needed to transfer, right?

Wrong.

Armstead fit in extremely well with the Ducks offense. He was a serious threat to opponents last season. Once Pac-10 play started, he found his groove and finished the season averaging 10.3 points a game. He played in every game, and started all but five. Any scoring threat the Ducks had will surely be hindered if he indeed departs.

Five is an exorbitant amount of transfers. Sure, with the disappointing season, the firing of Ernie Kent, and the over hyped, way too drawn out coaching search, we must’ve expected to lose a few.

But we hired a coach on April 24th. By my count, that’s exactly three months ago. A respectable coach, too. We’ve got a brand new, $200 million state of the art arena opening in 6 months. Who wouldn’t want to play in there.

Hell, we’ve even got an Athletic Director now. And he came from Kentucky!

Armstead’s desired transfer is probably fueled by where he thinks he can win the most throughout the rest of his college career. He stood out last season at Oregon, and would’ve next season too, but something in him is saying “Look, Malcolm, there’s still problems at this program. Get out now, and get out quick, before things get worse.” If he indeed does transfer, it’s because he thinks that, a year from now, the Ducks will be exactly where they are right now:

Disappointing attendance, a measly record, and sitting in the bowels of the Pac-10 standings.

It’ll be up to the remaining Ducks to prove him wrong.

It just doesn’t stop. The Oregon Ducks PR circus, that is.

Pat Kilkenny and Co. made it well known that they set the bar at “won a NCAA championship”, quite the expectations for a program that couldn’t even crack a double digit win total in a pathetically weak Pac-10 the past two seasons.

So after six embarrassingly long weeks, Oregon settled — err, found the man they wanted all along.

Dana Altman. A man who’s never smelled the Sweet 16 or faced a Pac-10 team before in his life.

Umm, not quite on par with PK’s said expectations.

But of course, it doesn’t just end there. Kilkenny had to do his best to sell his new hire to a fan base who had been mistakenly promised (read: deceived) into anticipating a “splashy” hire.

Altman’s press conference went well. He was cordial, he was comedic, he was self-deprecating (in a good way) and he inspired confidence.

The fans were sold.

Sure, he might not be a sexy name, but he’s a solid coach who can take this program in the right direction. I might even name my next son Dana.

So Pat, why did you feel the need to inject yourself back into the picture? Ego, arrogance, attention? All of the above?

After Altman finished, the reporters, and their tape recorders, found their way over to Kilkenny.

Kilkenny said, ”We had literally five natonal championship coaches that showed interest in our job and three of them would have taken it.”

Umm, then why didn’t you offer one the job?

The term he used, “national championship coach”, implies D-1 men’s basketball, but who knows what type of championship he really means? Maybe it’s D-1, but by the fact he didn’t hire any of them, it’s more likely to be D-3 or NAIA, or maybe it’s a middle school girls powerhouse.

Whatever the case, it undermines Dana Altman.

Come on, Pat. You hired Altman. He’s your man for the next 7 years and $12.6 million.

You’ve done your job, and we’ve talked ourselves into agreeing with you, so now stay out of the way and let Dana do his.

My immediate impression?

WTF.

After going with this approach for six weeks…

…Pat Kilkenny decided to change course — dramatically — and hire Creighton’s Dana Altman. My immediate impression?

WTF.

My sister’s name is Dana.

I didn’t even know who he was until I heard “Creighton coach.”

Now, after first finally figuring out where the hell Creighton is (not a good sign), reading the local writers discuss Altman’s need for a change of scenery, hearing the local Eugene writers on their high horses say “this is the type of coach Oregon should have been going after all along”, reading a poster on ATQ compare Altman to Bruce Pearl, and just about every other person with a keyboard desperately talk themselves off the ledge and into Altman simultaneously, I’m finally climbing on board.

It shouldn’t take that much to rationalize a hire.

I don’t think Phil Knight built Matthew Knight Arena to be the home of women’s volleyball.

On the bright side, no matter how Dana does here at Oregon, we’ll always have these girls to keep us entertained:

No matter how old we get, they always stay the same age.

Drew Wiley left for Boise State. Matt Humphrey decided to leave town. Josh Crittle said enough was enough and bolted, too.

So what does this mean?

PANIC!

Just kidding.

I really will miss Matt Humphrey, but he could have been so much better.

The way I see it, as much as I liked Humphs, and as much I loved seeing Wiley run from three-point line to three-point line (read: sarcasm), this doesn’t hurt for next year, and it’s actually a good thing for the future.

If no one transferred, there would be 10 juniors next year. No wonder Ernie Kent was only successful once every 3-4 years (among other things).

Even worse, not a single one of those 10 players is an all-Pac 10 quality player. Sure, Oregon might finish eighth or ninth instead of dead last, but in the long run, who cares?

This team was still going to suck next year no matter what.

With a new coach coming in – one of these days, or years – it will be his job to clean house and get the players that fit his system, before the Ducks can start climbing the conference ranks.

Honestly, outside of the possible exception of Jamil Wilson, there’s not a single player on this team that’s a blue-chip quality player.

Michael Dunigan? No post-up game whatsoever, lacks competitive fire, and outside of an exciting block or two per game, not a difference maker. Averaging nine and five for a sophomore McDonald’s All-American just doesn’t cut it.

Lekendric Longmire? Shot 41.6% this year as a junior. Yuck. Teondre Williams disappeared in conference play. And sorry, Portland kids, Garrett Sim is just not good. I don’t care that he was a demigod at Sunset High School.

Jeremy Jacob, E.J. Singler and Malcolm Armstead are all role players on a good team.

George Schroeder of the R-G nailed it yesterday when he wrote that the new coach shouldn’t be burdened with high expectations right away.

Fortunately, three players left, so now the new coach will have a chance to possibly bring in a couple of his recruits this year, and if not, more next year, to start building his team.

(Quick side note: Girard High School (Philly) combo guard, and McDonald’s All-American nominated Torrell Candaleria wants to be a Duck and is without an offer. ESPN rated him an 80 out of 100. More on him to come later, but you can check him out here for now.)

Don’t think the new arena will bring success right away, because let me tell you, this team is going to flat out stink next year.

All you should care about, aside from enjoying Matt Court – it truly is amazing – are signs of improvement.

Which young guy will step up next year? Can they run a coherent offense and make a stop on D?

It will be the ultimate building year.

So no, losing Wiley, Humphrey and Crittle is not the end of the world. It’s not time to press the panic button. It doesn’t mean the athletic department is falling deeper into embarrassment.

The fat needed to be trimmed.

The cycle of having 10-player recruiting classes and then nothing every four years needed to end.

Hopefully Pat Kilkenny can get his guy soon (although, who he should get is an entirely different topic), find a couple of freshman – the Terrences‘? – and begin to turn this thing around this year. Go .500 the year after that and make the tournament in Year Three.

Baby steps.

That may soon more like giant steps, but in reality, Oregon has too many resources to stay in the cellar for long — just look at the baseball team.

Once Oregon can prove its headed in the right direction, it will pick up steam and be back in contention soon enough.

I promise.

(fine print: student-bloggers can not be help responsible for no such promises. if the team fails, it is entirely and utterly their fault.)

UPDATE: I guess I’ll give myself a half-hearted, mildly depressed “told you so”. Brad Stevens has reportedly turned down the Oregon job. Tweet from @TheBigLead: “Source: brad stevens rejected Oregon today. Not a $ thing- simply not interested. Ouch. Phil knight not a happy man.”

Jamie Dixon, Steve Alford, Tubby Smith and Mark Turgeon: All used the Oregon coaching vacancy as an opportunity to get more money from their current programs.

Tom Izzo, Billy Donovan, Coack K: Seriously? Why even bother.

Mark Few: Forgetaboutit. He’s not coming.

The search for Ernie Kent’s replacement has taken more turns than Richard W. Lariviere’s stance on “openness”.

So good, they let him coach with his shoes off.

Now, it seems, we’re pinning our hopes on a 33-year-old who looks so young that a CBS commentator remarked “[Brad] Stevens looks like he checks the mirror every morning to see if it’s time to start shaving”.

There are certainly question marks about his experience – only three years as a head coach, all in the Horizon League – but he’s done better than anyone could have ever asked for, taking Butler literally all but three inches away from a national championship.

He has a knack for winning, thanks to an unparalleled passion for the game of basketball. While in college, he took his future wife to a high school basketball game on their third date.

This, unfortunately, is why I can’t see him coming to Oregon.

He’s born and bred Indiana. When Brad was five, he watched taped basketball games before he went to afternoon kindergarten. At seven, his dad started driving him to Indiana Hoosier games.

He was so dedicated to the game that he would bring the unprepared ingredients for grilled cheese sandwiches over to his friend Brandon’s house, so as to not waste time waiting for sandwiches to cook.

So you think that guy is going to pack up his family and leave Indiana, the place he’s lived his entire life, for Oregon, a place with relatively zero basketball tradition?

Not a chance.

More money, better facilities and flashier uniforms await him in Eugene, to be sure, but that’s not what Stevens is about. He’s about the tradition.

Stevens could build an empire at Butler, akin to what our neighbor Mark Few has done next door at Gonzaga, and I think there’s a good chance that happens. But if he leaves, it won’t be for Oregon. It will be for a school where basketball is first; where it’s more than a game, it’s a way of life.

I could see him taking the Wake Forest job for exactly those reasons.

So now that I’ve poopoo’d all your excitement about the latest wunderkind, I’ll make up for it by suggesting another name. One that didn’t take me long to talk myself into and now I’m starting to love.

Mike Anderson.

If we could get him to leave Mizzou, I think he’d be a perfect fit.

He’s won everywhere he’s gone.

At University of Alabama-Birmingham, he took the Blazers to three NCAA tournament appearances in his four years, including a 76-75 upset over #1 seeded Kentucky to get to the Sweet 16, and he was named Conference USA Coach of the Year in 2004 (over John Calipari at Memphis).

Anderson was then hired by Missouri in 2006, a once-proud program that Quinn Snyder trashed and left for the NCAA sanctioning-wolves.

After a middling first two seasons, Anderson led the Tigers to the Elite Eight in 2009 and the second round in this year’s tournament.

He runs an up-tempo, aggressive style of play that would be able to take advantages of the athletes Oregon has in a way other candidates wouldn’t.

That's the type of badass nickname I could get behind.

Dubbed “40 Minutes of Hell”, Anderson’s style would be perfect for the type of players that Oregon can recruit (those who would make the most of the Ducks’ supreme practice/workout facilities) and also, he’d be going after a different kind of recruit than most of his opponents on the West Coast – advantage Oregon.

He even has strong moral standards, booting two of Mizzou’s star players, leading scorer Stefhon Hannah and Kalen Grimes, from the team after a night club fracas (Hannah) and being arrested for hitting a man with the butt of a shotgun (Grimes).

John Canzano would be proud.

At 50 years old, he’s relatively young, proven and more than capable of making Oregon an immediate contender.

Only problem is, can Pat Kilkenny/Spencer Stuart/whoever’s running the athletic department, convince him to leave the Tigers, where he just signed a 7-year extension at $1.6 million per? (turning down a $2 million offer from Georgia in the process)

Anderson has never coached outside of the South before, but I think an opportunity to become King of the West Coast could be attractive enough for the Alabama native to leave his roots.

Plus, wouldn’t it be awesome to watch E.J. Singler scrambling around like a beheaded chicken on the full-court press?

That’s enough of a reason to hire Anderson right there.

I’m sold.

And in case you forgot the Missouri-Oregon game this year, here you go.

As one of the staunchest leaders of the Fire Ernie Kent Bandwagon this past year, even I was touched by the sincerity of his heartfelt speech Tuesday afternoon at his going-away press conference.

Photo credit to benzduck from AddictedToQuack

It’s clear: the man has a deeper passion for the University of Oregon and its basketball program than most people have for anything.

It’s bittersweet. For the program to continue to be successful and build on what Kent built, the man who loves it most would have to leave. And be fired, no less.

Watching Kent wear his heart on his sleeve was so moving and poignant that it almost seemed like a subtle guilt trip. His emotion was palpable.

Unfortunately, none of this changes the fact that Ernie couldn’t avoid two separate five-game losing streaks in conference play this season, a 14-game streak last season and, most importantly, leaving more empty seats in Mac Court than in my Psychology 201 class the day after a midterm.

Ernie Kent said it himself: “You may find a better basketball coach. You won’t find anybody that has the passion and love that I have for UO.”

Yes, yes and yes.

After the press conference, I was listening to John Canzano interview former-Duck great Freddie Jones on his radio show, the Bald Faced Truth.

Canzano was peppering Jones with subtly negative questions, just waiting for him to slip and say something bad about his former coach’s inability to develop players.

After seamlessly shrugging off the first few attempts, Freddie fell into the BFT’s trap, when he asked the Slam Dunk Champ why he improved so much between his junior and senior season.

The response?

“I didn’t want to work for a living.”

Not Kent’s coaching, not his tutelage, but instead, it was the sudden realization that if he didn’t personally step his game up, his awe-inspiring athleticism would go all for naught.

This was the case far too often during Kent’s tenure in Eugene (for every Freddie Jones, there’s a Joevan Catron and aTajuan Porter), and the main reason why the perpetual fire Ernie rumors finally climaxed this season, forcing Mike Bellotti to appease the masses.

Yet, Kent’s speech was so compelling today that it was akin to the Men in Black flash memory eraser gadget.

People got sucked back in, as if they forgot they were ready to throw him to the wolves just a few days before.

Understandable, considering all the things Ernie Kent has done for this University, things much bigger than just basketball. Sometimes it can be easy to forget the real person when the wins are such a big deal.

But ultimately, for better or the worse, major college sports is big business, and it was time to part ways with our coach of 13 years. Especially with a new 13,000 seat Phil Knight shrine on the way.

One of my Twitter followers tweeted me today, saying, “Kent should have been a politician.”

I wouldn’t put it past him, especially here in Oregon. But first, like Ernie said himself, “I will coach again … I have a lot of coaching left in me.”

Although I may not be sad by the fact that Kent is leaving, on behalf of all Oregon fans, I can safely say, we wish him the best wherever he goes.

The always popular John Canzano wrote a column yesterday bidding farewell to Mac Court.

Don't worry, The Pit may be gone, but The Pit Crew will be back again in full force next season, just in an arena that has urinals where you don't have to be touching hips with the guy you're peeing next to.

As usual, it caused a bit of controversy. Minutes after it was posted to the interwebs, several of my friends gushed to me about what an idiot he was and how he had no respect for The Pit’s history.

No, Canzano didn’t reminisce about the famous “Tall Firs” and their run to the first ever NCAA tournament title in 1939 or Oregon’s upset over No. 1 UCLA in 2007, or any other memory that had been made there in the past 84 years.

Instead, Mr. BFT called Mac Court something no Oregon Duck fans wanted to hear: a dump. Even going as far as to say: “Mac Court is cramped. It’s outdated. It’s become a cumbersome place to watch a game, and I’m not sure many will really miss it.”

But you know what? He’s right. Well, at least for me.

Calm down, calm down. Let me explain myself.

I’m only a sophomore at the University of Oregon, and the first game I ever attended at Mac Court was against St. Mary’s last season. Fittingly, it was a loss.

During my entire tenure here in Eugene, the Ducks record is 23-38 overall and 9-27 in the Pac-10.

I’ve had nothing to be excited about. Honestly, my greatest memory from The Pit was when we beat Stanford for our first conference win (in late February, my apologies Robbie G) and stormed the court in pity celebration.

(The same kind of celebration like when a pitcher walks the bases loaded on 12 straight pitches and then receives a mocking cheer when he finally throws a strike. Not the good kind of celebration.)

I was never in The Pit to see Luke, Luke and Freddie or Aaron Brooks. I have no special connection to this stadium.

If I didn’t know any better, based on my two years of experience alone, I would have guessed Mac Court was just a tiny, cramped, usually empty arena, with a home team that usually loses, and which also curiously happens to be located across the street from a cemetery.

Now, l realize this is a selfish opinion, but that’s why I have a blog.

For Oregon to reach the next level in the national basketball landscape, the new stadium is a must. Players are tired of cramped showers, dilapidated locker rooms and vacant seats. Top recruits in 2010 don’t care about history; they care about state of the art, and cool.

Mac Court is not cool. Mac Court is historical. There’s a reason why most inner city kids don’t want the History Channel: it’s just not cool.

New memories will be made in Matthew Knight Arena. A new hope.

As Canzano says: “Hope that Oregon can become relevant. Hope that the new building will hold more great memories than the old one. Hope that there will be thrills, and memories, and that someday 100 years from now when Matthew Knight Arena is outdated and crumbling that someone will ask, “How could they tear down this wonderful place?!?”

Most everyone knew Ernie Kent would be fired following this season. Unfortunately, it had to happen during the second half of the final Pac-10 game at historic Mac Court. At least they got the win though, right?

This was a move that had to happen. The program was basically stuck in neutral, waiting for its talented young players to blossom once they became seniors. Problem is, in college basketball these days, you can’t only win once every four years. (He only had four seasons where his teams finished conference play over .500).

With a brand new, state of the art $200 million stadium due to be unveiled at the start of 2011 Pac-10 season, Oregon needed a change. If Ernie couldn’t sell out the shoebox that is Mac Court, then, well, there would be a lot of empty seats at expansive (and expensive) Matt Court.

Although it certainly wasn’t a smooth ending, Kent should be greatly appreciated for his 13-years as the Ducks head coach, as the program has grown leaps and bounds under his leadership. (Although I could make the argument that the growth was almost completely connected to Nike’s sudden “interest” in the program).

According to KVAL’s initial report, athletic director Mike Bellotti fired Kent on Feb. 22, after home losses to Stanford and California. The TV station says the firing will take effect, when the Ducks wrap up the 2009-10 season, presumably after their “play-in” game to the Pac-10 tournament. KEZI reports Kent was fired earlier last week. KMTR says talks between Bellotti and Kent will continue through the Pac-10 tournament.

In addition, Kent’s entire staff will be replaced, with the possible exception of assistant Kenny Payne.

This is where it gets interesting, at least in regards to Kent’s replacement.

Payne has long been friends with ‘World Wide Wes’, who is often called the most powerful man in basketball because of his influence behind the scenes. Payne’s friendship helped create a recruiting pipeline in Detroit, bringing in Malik Hairston and Tajuan Porter.

Yesterday, SI’s Seth Davis wrote a story that William Wesley has agreed to be an agent, representing NBA and college coaches for Creative Artists Agency. Its client list includes Lebron James and John Calipari, among just about every others big name in sports.

Wesley has a special gift for befriending star players, including Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans. Both of those players coincidentally went on to play for his client.

I hope athletic director Mike Bellotti lets Payne stay on, and hire a client of CAA.

As for Oregon’s needs for its next basketball coach, the goal is clear: fill the seats. The Ducks couldn’t even fill The Pit tonight for its last conference game ever, and if you haven’t heard, the new stadium is a bit bigger.

Yes, the athletic department might be in the red right now, but the boosters won’t allow the basketball program to wallow in mediocrity. The Kent firing signifies this.

One donor in particularly might have an interest in Bellotti’s hiring process. (Here’s a hint who: he donated $100 million towards the new stadium).

If Phil Knight has already given that much, spending a few million more on a top coach is a must in order to make the most on his already weighty investment.

Although I don’t have a complete list of CAA coaching clients, I’m sure there are a few big names on there that could be attracted to Oregon for the right price.

Of course, filling the seats is not the only thing of interest. Winning is important as well, although it’d be nice to have a coach who can create interest in the program and sell tickets in and of himself.

My top quality: player development. That has been Kent’s biggest bugaboo. Kent would get talent, but very rarely would there be noticed improvement, thus, leading to his teams only being competitive when his star players were seniors (Luke, Luke and Fred; AB, Malik and Bryce).

Hopefully the new coach can teach Michael Dunigan what a “screen” is, and also run a half-court set that actually resembles a functional offense.

Is that too much to ask for?

(I will have another piece in the next day or two further discussing possible coaching replacements for Ernie Kent)

For now, here’s a quick list of possibilities: Mark Few, Steve Lavin (five sweet 16′s in 7 years at UCLA), Jeff Capel, Mark Turgeon, Tubby Smith, Terry Porter, Cameron Dollar and Randy Bennett.

TP is 2-21 from beyond the arc in February. It's no coincidence his initials are "TP".

At this point, I’m just about out of words on how bad the basketball team is. The team is playing lazy, Ernie Kent needs to be replaced, blah blah blah.

And although you might disagree, Saturday was no different.

Sure, Oregon was up most of the first half and tied going into halftime, but that doesn’t mean they were playing any better. Arizona State looked awful. They looked like the Ducks, except they actually made a few more shots. Possibly ASU’s worst half of the season.

I was so confident Oregon would blow it that with the Ducks up three and just under five minutes left in the half, I offered my friend a five dollar bet Oregon would lose by 10. He said no. I offered 15. He tentatively agreed.

And then what happened?

Shockingly, the wheels came off, ASU stopped playing down to Oregon’s level, and ran away with it.

Seriously, when was the last time you sat through an entire game without wondering once when the typical Ernie Kent-collapse would happen? 2007?

It’s like clockwork. Early second half, every game. If that’s not on Ernie, I don’t know what is.

Unfortunately for me, the Ducks found a little pride when ASU got up 15, and then Drew Wiley (the same guy who brought a puppy to campus last week to pick up girls, seriously), led the standard attempted comeback that would undoubtedly fall short. And it did.

But I have a solution.

Forget Tajuan Porter and his 39% shooting (16% in February), forget Michael Dunigan and his pathetic excuse for a free throw and forget Ernie Kent’s .188 winning percentage (6-26) against Pac-10 teams since the 2007-08 Pac-10 tourney.

Instead, sign up the guys from Manther.

What’s Manther, you might ask?

Manther is a hip-hop group, a la Supwitchugirl, composed of three 20-something-year-old Oregon alums who can straight up ball.

If you haven’t seen this video, you’ve been missing out.

They can sing, drop beats, and most importantly, make Tajuan Porter’s range look less than Josh Crittle’s. Seriously.

Prepare to be amazed.

And if that wasn’t enough, there’s another one:

While you’re at it, be sure to watch their other videos on YouTube and follow them on the Twitter machine as well.
